How this channel works

That registration, A2P 10DLC, is the first real cost of building here. Brand registration runs a few dollars, campaigns around $10 a month, and carriers have blocked unregistered traffic outright since December 2024. Registered messages carry lower carrier fees; unregistered ones cost several times more when they go through at all. Toll-free numbers use a separate verification path that takes one to three weeks.

SMS has no rich features. No typing indicators, no read receipts, no reactions, no payments in the thread. Everything an agent expresses has to fit in plain text, which is a real design constraint and occasionally an advantage, it forces brevity that the richer channels let you avoid.

RCS is the successor, now supported on iPhone as well as Android, and it restores cards, carousels and read receipts. It carries its own vetting through the same registry. Most agents here treat SMS as the floor and use it as fallback when a richer channel is unavailable.
