What WhatsApp costs an iMessage agent

Most agents in this directory are iMessage-first, and 7 of 33 do not work at all for someone on Android. WhatsApp is the usual answer to that, and only 7 have taken it. Here is what it actually costs, and why the answer changes completely depending on your volume.

The one thing to understand

Every provider pays Meta the same per-message rate. Meta sets it, they pass it through, and none of them can beat it. So what separates them is entirely what they add on top, and they add it in four completely different shapes. That is the whole comparison, and it means the cheapest provider at 500 messages a month is the most expensive at 50,000.

What each one adds on top of Meta

WhatsApp providers compared by what they charge above Meta’s own rate
ProviderPer messageMonthlyWhat they say about markup
TwilioCharges $0.005 a message on top of Meta, in or out, with no platform fee published.$0.005None publishedTwilio's per-message fee for WhatsApp is $0.005, inbound or outbound.
TelnyxAdvertises $0 markup on Meta's rate, and charges $0.004 per message in platform usage.$0.004None publishedMeta's rate. $0 markup.
360dialogFlat monthly per number, from €49, with genuinely nothing added per message.Nothing€49/numberNo markup on Meta fees.
respond.ioA messaging platform with seats rather than a raw API, from $79 a month, no per-message fee.Nothing$79WhatsApp fees are not included in any respond.io subscription. Meta charges these fees based on your usage.

Meta’s own per-message rate is on top of all of these and is the same whichever you pick. Figures from each provider’s own pricing page, checked 2026-09-06.

Where it flips

At a few hundred messages a month, Twilio is the cheapest way onto WhatsApp: no monthly fee, and $0.005 a message on a small number is nothing. 360dialog, at €49 per number before a single message, is the most expensive thing on this page.

Around ten thousand messages that reverses. Twilio’s $0.005 each way has become real money on a conversational agent, and 360dialog is still €49. By fifty thousand the gap is not close, and it keeps widening, because one of these numbers grows with usage and the other does not.

This is the same shape as the iMessage market, where metered pricing wins small and flat pricing wins large. It is worth internalising once: for any messaging channel, the pricing model matters more than the price, and the only question that resolves it is how much you will actually send. The cost calculator does the arithmetic across channels.

Two details that catch people. Twilio charges its fee on inbound messages as well as outbound, so a back-and-forth exchange is billed twice per turn rather than once. And Telnyx advertises “$0 markup”, which is true of Meta’s rate and silent about the $0.004 per-message platform charge published on the same page.

Provider by provider

Twilio

No published platform fee. $0.005 per message each way on top of Meta's own template rate.

Twilio is the most-used route to WhatsApp and prices it as a per-message channel fee: $0.005 whether the message is going out or coming in, on top of Meta's own template rates, which it passes through and publishes separately.

The inbound charge is the detail worth noticing. Most comparisons quote the number as if it applied to outbound only, but a back-and-forth exchange incurs it in both directions, which roughly doubles the effective rate for a conversational agent as opposed to a notification sender.

No monthly platform fee is published, which makes it the cheapest option at very low volume and the most expensive at high volume among the providers here. Its Messaging Engagement Suite, covering link shortening, click tracking and scheduling, is a separate $0.015 per message with the first thousand free each month.

Telnyx

Meta's rate passed through unchanged, plus $0.004 per message in platform usage. Committed plans from $500/month.

Telnyx passes Meta's messaging fee through unchanged and says so prominently: "Meta's rate. $0 markup." That claim is accurate about Meta's rate and incomplete about your bill.

On the same page it publishes a platform usage charge of $0.004 per message. So the amount Telnyx adds is $0.004, which is real money and is lower than Twilio's $0.005, but it is not zero and the headline invites you to think it is. The distinction between "no markup on the underlying rate" and "no charge from us" is the sort of thing worth reading carefully anywhere in this market.

Its framing elsewhere is genuinely clearer than most: "two lines, our rate and the carrier's passthrough, both published, neither marked up." Committed plans with volume discounts start from $500 a month.

360dialog

€49 per number per month regular, €99 premium, €249 advanced. Meta's fees billed separately with no markup.

360dialog is a Meta-tier provider and prices the opposite way to everyone else here: a flat monthly fee per WhatsApp number, with Meta's messaging fees billed separately and nothing added on top.

The published tiers are €49 per number per month for regular, €99 for premium and €249 for advanced, with a separate partner platform arrangement running from €250 to €1,000 a month plus per-channel add-ons.

The shape matters more than the number. Because it charges nothing per message, its cost stops rising the moment you are past the monthly fee, while every per-message provider keeps climbing. At a few hundred messages a month it is the most expensive option on this page. Somewhere in the low tens of thousands it becomes the cheapest, and the gap widens from there.

respond.io

Starter $79/month with 5 users, Growth $159 with 10, Advanced $279 with 10. Extra users $12 to $24 each.

respond.io is included here because it appears in every WhatsApp provider comparison, and because for most people reading this site it is the wrong tool.

Its pricing is $79 a month for Starter with five users, $159 for Growth with ten, and $279 for Advanced with ten, with additional users from $12 to $24 each. Meta's fees are billed by Meta directly and respond.io adds no per-message charge.

The seat pricing is the tell. This is a shared inbox for a support team, with automation attached, rather than infrastructure for an autonomous agent. If your product is a piece of software having conversations, you are paying for human seats you do not have. If your product is a support team with an agent helping them, it is a reasonable fit and the per-message economics are among the cleanest here.

Why this page is short

This site is about agents you can message, and iMessage is where almost all of them live. WhatsApp matters here for one reason: it is the answer to “my agent does not work outside the United States”. So this covers what that costs and stops, rather than becoming a general comparison of messaging infrastructure, which is a different site that plenty of people already run.

If you are choosing a channel rather than a provider, the channel comparison is the page you want.
