Hermes

Hermes is the self-hosted end of this directory: an open-source agent from Nous Research that you install on a server of your own, connect to the messaging platforms you already use, and point at whichever model provider you prefer. It states forty built-in skills, browser automation, code execution and a cron scheduler that can deliver to any connected platform, which is how it reaches you without being asked.

It earns a place here because of what it answers rather than what it does. Every managed agent in this set asks you to trust an arrangement you cannot see: whose account sends the messages, who holds the transcript, which model provider reads it. Hermes replaces all of that with a machine you own, and its own page makes the trade explicit: MIT licensed, no telemetry, and memory stored in a directory on your own disk. What you take on in exchange is everything a managed product was doing for you, including keeping it running and keeping it patched.

It is also the answer to a question this directory has been asked in public. A user comparing Meta's Muse to alternatives noted that a third-party agent working inside somebody else's marketplace can be banned from it, while the platform owner's own agent cannot. Hermes is the version of that trade with the platform risk moved entirely onto you: nothing to revoke, because nobody is providing anything.

We have recorded no privacy policy and no security contact. For a project distributed as source with no service attached, the first is arguably not the right question, and the second is: a self-hosted agent holding your messages and your credentials is exactly the kind of software a researcher needs somewhere to report a hole to.

Hermes ships as source under the MIT licence and runs on a machine you control, so there is no service collecting anything and no company to publish a policy. Its own page states zero telemetry and memory stored in a directory on your disk. What that moves onto you is everything a policy would otherwise cover.
